I ordered myself an iPad 2, although I saved the money from my pocket money I still felt guilty about the indulgence (especially with the upcoming redundancy) but I thought ‘sod it’ drew the money out and went to buy myself my Pad. Obviously I hadn’t paid attention to the news as very shop I went into had sold out! Feeling a little deflated I shuffled home empty handed. I ordered one from Apple www. And now I have to sit and wait. Despite knowing that it was not going to arrive until next week I am watching the post man every day. Should have had an email today to say that it had been dispatched today but no email.
Update! 9.23pm Apple have just texted to say my iPad has been dispatched! So now it is a waiting game…
Another update! Email has been received to say ETA 20th May or before, as received email on 19th it is unlikely to come before 20th but could be here tomorrow. Is it wrong for A 39 yr old to be excited about a toy???
20th May 2011:
The iPad is here! Having very gently unpacked it I switched it on and the glowing Apple appeared, then unfortunately it then tells me I have to connect to iTunes before I can do anything, unable to do so using ECC laptop so iPad back in it’s box till I get homel
21st May 2011: iPad now up and running, it is a pretty little thing, just like a big iPhone that doesn’t make calls or texts. Am enjoying playing with it, has a purpose somewhere in my life I am sure, although not entirely sure where yet? Nice little thing to carry round, not sure if I could write a full novel on it yet though, I wonder if anyone has tried that yet. Strange on screen keyboard is actually quite good, it feels ‘proper’ and even a feel of typing (sort of)…
Doesn’t feel quite as robust as the iPhone and think it is going to have to be treated a little more carefully than both the phone and the laptop (especially the laptop that looks like it has been r un over by a bus)
Have worked out though that for such a portable little device there are so many different add-ons like stands, covers, keyboards and mice that the overall weight could end up being more than a lap top. I am very interested to see if the battery life is really as good as they say, as even with gentle handling my laptop won’t even get half the amount on a full charge than they claim this little thing can.
25th May 2011:
The iPad affair continues on in a very positive way, it has now been just under a week and although honeymoon period is over I am still in love with my little White toy!
Walking through town this week I felt very bad as I had gone out and purchased my very lovely toy and was currently walking around with it wrapped in a very cheap and questionable quality £1 foam thing. I had to sort this out straight away.
Popped in to the loca shop and found the exact thing I was looking for , a lovely black case which covers front and back of the iPad made by Apple but with the over the top cost of normal Apple items discounted off! Bargain I felt and had a closer look, was pretty much sold on the idea, at this point the ales woman pointed out that the case had been actually designed for the iPad 1 but a man had been in walker that day and tried it on an iPad 2 and it had fit very snugly. I was sold, sweaty cash handed over and back off to the office to try it out…
It’s bloody baggy, not massively so, but baggy at the back non the less. But what do I do, take it back to the shop? Live with the bagginess? I didn’t know. Needless to say I was not a happy bunny. Tried stuffing the bag of the case with the de-constructed foam thing mentioned earlier, served the purpose well but now ideal as it is a bit of a chore to get it in and then remove it ( Has to b ere moved to fit in to the charging dock) couldn’t cope with it so I spent yesterday searching round for the answer and have found it! Rubber backed mouse mats to the rescue! When cut down to size it serves the purpose very well. Have one glued in place and doing a grand job, but I have already identified some alterations I need to make for version 2.
27th May
I’m becoming doubtful about the boasted ‘ten hour’ battery life for the ipad2, I am currently sitting at 77% after about 1hr of use and 3hrs asleep.
20th September
It has been a shockingly long time since I updated my iPad2 page, but it has been a long time for me to test things out and see what’s what.
